The Colonnade, spanning 90 meters with its integrated Spa Waters Hall, was constructed from 1910 to 1911 by the architect Max Littmann from Munich and is the largest building of its kind in Europe. The Colonnade - and large parts of the town - were spared from both world wars, but the American occupying forces used the building as a workshop for their tanks and vehicles after the Second World War, making a restoration necessary shortly after the war.
Bad Kissingen’s medicinal springs
Ever since 1 May 1911, medicinal water from the springs is served twice a day to spa guests. The well ladies, clad in typical, traditional garb, are happy to provide information on the existing medicinal springs “Rakoczy”, “Pandur” and “Luitpold” and the Max Fountain as well as Bad Kissingen’s own so-called bitter water, which all can be used for drinking regimes. The healing effect of medicinal springs with a high mineral content was discovered several hundred years ago and has been a popular treatment among the European high aristocracy.
